THE SANCTITY OF SAPTAPATI

Saptapati is the most important ritual in sastric marriages. The bride's right leg is placed on a grinding stone (Ammi) and the bridegroom holds her toes. The bride is then asked to move seven steps forward to the uttarance of seven mantras.

The mantras are for step 1. unfailing seasonal rains and favourable weather conditions; 2. increase in production of food grains prosperity; step 3. crealing a fervour to observe viratams; step 4. healthy life, free from disease; step.5 cows to yield plenty of milk; step 6. receiving the blessings of the six ruthus; and step 7. blessings of the saptarishis. Let the bride's entry make the day propitious.
